The Extensive History Of Coventry
Coventry is an ancient city and is the largest city located in the Midlands. This city while not considered a core city it is located as one of the farthest from the coasts of England. Birmingham is considered a core city and Coventry is too close to be considered another core city. Coventry was the first city to be twinned with another city, Volgograd, which was formally known as Stalingrad.
Coventry is an ancient city as its history is much longer and stretches further back then most of the other cities in England. The geographical features make it an advantageous spot for settlement as the original settlement was in the present day center which was in a bowl shape. The surrounding area provided plenty of food, water and shelter.
Coventry contains a Benedictine monastery, roman settlement and Saxon nunnery throughout time. The abbey eventually held a market outside its gates which caused m ore people to settle in the area. During the Middle Ages the cloth trade was very prominent and this was a very important spot for cloth in England. In the 18th and 19th centuries Coventry was one of three centers for watch making and clock manufacturing. This industry flourished until the Swiss began producing watches.
Several bicycles were invented in Coventry and their production eventually lead to the development of motor vehicles. At one time there were over 100 different car producers in the area that had processing plant in Coventry. The last car manufacturer closed its doors in 2006 but many car companies still have headquarters in Coventry.
St. Michael’s cathedral is one of the most well known landmarks in Coventry. Only a small section of the cathedral is still remaining as this cathedral was ruined by bombing during World War II. You can still see the outer wall and spire. The new cathedral was created by Basil Spence and is located next to the older cathedral’s ruins.
An additional popular tourist stop is the Coventry Transport Museum. This museum has the largest collection of road vehicle in the world and all the cars were made in England. Many of the cars in the museum have held world speed records. You can also visit the Herbert Art Gallery and Museum which is located in a reconstructed Roman fort.
This city has many links in literature and drama as Coventry was used as the model for the town of Middlemarch by George Eliot. The Coventry carol was named for the city and first premiered in the Coventry Cycle Mystery Play.
